"We who choose to surround ourselves with lives even more temporary than our own live within a fragile circle, easily and often breached, unable to accept its awful gaps. We still would live no other way. We cherish memory as the only certain immortality, never fully understanding the necessary plan."

"Separate Lifetimes" - Irving Townsend

Who is Slippy?

Slippy is the Dalmatian that started Dalmatian Adoption and Rescue. She was a scared, lonely, battered and bruised Dalmatian, who had been tossed out onto the streets. She was in such a terrible condition that you could feel nothing but pity for her. But Slippy had spirit and strength. The first time Slippy met her soon-to-be guardian, she put aside all of her fear and memories of the abuse she suffered in the past, and came forward and bravely wagged her tail and licked her future guardian's hand. Her future guardian looked at her and saw the "spark" in her eyes. In an instant one could see the horrible past Slippy had suffered, but could also see the kindness and strength that emanated from her. Slippy went home with her new guardian and stayed with her until she died on May 18, 2004.

Slippy had a wonderful new life in her new home. It took time, patience and dedicated veterinary care to rehabilitate Slippy, but every second was worth it. Slippy was truly a magnificent dog. But her guardian often pondered ... what happened to all of the other Dalmatians that were "diamonds in the rough"? How many other people could see past the cuts, bruises, infections, dirty coats, and untrained manners and see the beautiful dog that lived within? How many other people would take the time to mend a dog's body and spirit? Very few, the guardian decided.

How many people were missing a great dog like Slippy in their life? Lots, the guardian decided. Could the guardian continue to let Dalmatians like Slippy be thrown away by owners who simply needed guidance in dealing with issues? No, the guardian decided. Could the guardian continue to let dogs like Slippy be homeless? No, the guardian decided. And at that moment Dalmatian Adoption and Rescue was born.

Slippy was a dog who had an enormous effect on everyone she met. Everyone loved her and loved to pet her. Her beautiful personality touched everyone ... even those that claimed not to like dogs. She was fixture at every Dalmatian Adoption and Rescue event, happily wagging her tail and waiting for people to pet her. In her younger days she would happily roll onto her back for a belly rub. Slippy is truly an inspiration to everyone. If Slippy could overcome the demons and fears of her past and learn to trust and love life again, shouldn't we all learn to do a little better ourselves?

They will not go quietly, the dogs who've shared our lives.

In subtle ways they let us know their spirit still survives.

Old habits still make us think we hear a barking at the door.

Or step back when we drop a tasty morsel on the floor.

Our feet still go around the place the food dish used to be.

And, sometimes, coming home at night we miss them terribly.

And although time may bring new friends and a new food dish to fill,

That one place in our hearts belongs to them ...and always will.
